New Hampshire has 234 municipalities with 13 cities and 222 towns though some towns are much bigger than some of the cities. Manchester is the largest municipality in terms of population with 109, 691 residents and Hart’s location the smallest with 33. New Hampshire has 9,351 square miles of which 382 square miles is water. Pittsburg is the largest town in terms of land area with 282 square miles and Greenville the smallest with 6.9 square miles.

No matter what form of government a municipality employs, each municipality provides essential services to the citizens of their community such as police and fire service, emergency rescue and ambulance service, code enforcement, recreational services, conservation programs, library services, water, sewer, and public education.
